The House of Mita the Cyclist
Monument Restauration + Conversion
The House of Mita the Cyclist is an important landmark in the history of Bucharest, both for society and the city’s built environment. There were three existing houses on the project land, two of them being historical monuments, in an eclectic style, and the third one was a connecting body. The project included the rehabilitation and revitalization of the two historical monuments, and on the footprint of the third body, without historical value, a connecting body was built. The legislation also allowed the overstory of this connecting body, which became a neutral background for the two monuments to stand out. Monuments must survive, but the real challenge is to adapt them and bring them to life so that they host a new activity, sometimes different than the one for which they were built.
